Historic Walking Tour of Jewish Philadelphia
WHEN
Sunday, September 14, 2025, 10:00 am - 11:30 am
DETAILS
The tour will begin with an introduction to early Jewish life in Philadelphia. We will hear how Jews in Philadelphia from the 1880’s through the 1920’s flocked to locations between Spruce and Christian Street and 2nd and 6th. This area became the Philadelphia equivalent of New York’s famous Lower East Side. Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe created a vibrant community with its own Yiddish Theater, literary societies and newspapers, along with synagogues and banks, bath houses and delicatessens.
After the tour ends, at noon, those who are interested will gather at the Famous 45h Street Delicatessen. Everyone will be invited at their own cost for a lunch together to continue to enjoy each other’s company.
