Statement Condemning Violence

Thursday morning we awoke shaken and terrified. Our moorings of safety were ripped apart. A dagger slicing through  our hearts.

The news reverberated all around us and throughout the world. Two young Israeli diplomats, about to be engaged, were brutally murdered when leaving the Capitol Jewish Museum. The facts of the killing were especially heinous. 21  shots were fired, including when the young victims were on the ground. Up to that moment, the future was theirs. Not now. Dreams of futures forever smashed.

They were attending an American Jewish Committee event, designed to promote “Israeli-Palestinian and regional collaboration” and to address the Gazan humanitarian crisis. The Museum was near the FBI headquarters, many other federal buildings and museums, and not far from the White House. It had all seemed so  safe.

And what was uttered by the suspect when placed into custody? “Free, Free Palestine”. We have heard that before. The suspect’s intentions were clear.

This is a galvanizing moment for the Jewish community.

This pernicious and savage violence was designed to kill young Jews, interfere with efforts to achieve peace, deter the Israeli people, and intimidate and chill all of us. To make all of us feel unsafe, at Jewish Museums, synagogues, and everywhere.

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society condemns these savage killings for Antisemitic and political ends or any ends.

We must work to prevent Antisemitic violence. We must not be intimidated or held hostage to fear. We must band together as a community, stronger than ever. More united than ever. Relentless ever more.

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society is committed to the safety of all Jews and to a democracy without fear, a democracy without intimidation and a democracy without Antisemitism.
